They look like a button that doesn’t respond.

The website appears to be “working”.
Users rarely tell you when something goes wrong
From a technical point of view, it’s tempting to assume that users will report problems. In practice, this almost never happens.
Most visitors don’t know whether an issue is temporary, local, or caused by their device. They also don’t want to spend time explaining it. If something doesn’t work, the simplest solution is to leave and try somewhere else.
This means many errors never become support tickets. They don’t show up in emails. They don’t create alerts.

Most websites rely on monitoring that answers one question:
“Is the site online?”
Server uptime, HTTP status codes, and basic error logs are useful, but they only detect hard failures. They don’t tell you whether a real person was able to complete what they came to do.
From the system’s perspective, a page that loads successfully but doesn’t respond to user interaction is still “healthy”. From the user’s perspective, it’s broken.
This gap is where many costly problems live.
Errors often depend on context
Another reason these issues are hard to spot is that they are rarely universal.
An error might only happen:
- on a specific browser,
- on mobile but not desktop,
- after a certain sequence of actions,
- or when two plugins interact in an unexpected way.

Proactive monitoring focuses on observing real user behavior, not just system status.
Instead of asking “did the page load?”, it asks:
- did the user encounter an error,
- what were they doing when it happened,
- and how did it affect their session?
This doesn’t require users to report anything. The system notices problems as they occur, in the context where they matter.
